High friction surface treatments (HFST) primarily use durable calcined bauxite aggregate and various polymer resin binders to significantly increase pavement traction.
Key Materials
High friction surfacing is a two-component system:
1. Aggregate The aggregate provides the microtexture essential for skid resistance and is chosen for its hardness and resistance to polishing under heavy traffic.
Calcined Bauxite: This is the most widely used and recommended aggregate for high-friction surfacing due to its superior abrasive qualities, extreme hardness, and long-term ability to maintain frictional resistance.
Other Aggregates: In less critical or preventative applications, materials like ceramic aggregates, flint, granite, basalt, or steel slag can also be used.
