High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) Coating Overview 🛣️

High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) is a pavement safety treatment that involves applying a thin layer of highly polish- and abrasion-resistant aggregate to the existing road surface using a durable polymer resin binder. The primary goal of HFST is to restore or significantly enhance pavement friction to reduce roadway departure, run-off-road (ROR), and wet-weather-related crashes.

HFST is typically a spot treatment used in targeted locations with high friction demand, such as:

  • Sharp Horizontal Curves and ramps.

  • Steep Grades (downhill approaches).

  • High-Volume Intersections where frequent braking occurs.
  • Bridge decks.

🛠️ Materials and Components

HFST systems consist of two main components:

  1. Polymer Resin Binder:
    • This is a multi-component, thermosetting polymer resin (often epoxy, polyester, or methyl methacrylate (MMA)) that chemically cures to form a strong, durable adhesive.

    • Its function is to securely bond the high-friction aggregate to the existing pavement (asphalt or concrete) and hold the aggregate particles firmly in place under high shear stress from traffic.
  2. High-Friction Aggregate:
    • The most common and highest-performing aggregate used is calcined bauxite. This material is extremely hard, durable, and, crucially, highly resistant to polishing under heavy traffic.

    • The angular, fine gravel particles (typically $1\text{ mm}$ to $3\text{ mm}$ in size) create exceptional microtexture and macrotexture on the road surface, which provides the superior skid resistance in both wet and dry conditions.

⚙️ Application Process

The application is a multi-step process that ensures proper adhesion and long-term performance:

  1. Surface Preparation: The existing pavement must be thoroughly cleaned to be dry, clean, and free of dust, oil, and loose material. This is critical for the resin binder to achieve a strong bond. Surface repair or scarifying may also be required.

  2. Binder Application: The multi-component polymer resin binder is mixed on-site and applied to the prepared pavement surface using specialized automated equipment or, for smaller areas, manually with squeegees. It is applied to a uniform, thin thickness (typically a few millimeters).
  3. Aggregate Placement: Immediately after the binder is placed, a generous, continuous layer of the high-friction aggregate (calcined bauxite) is broadcast over the wet resin. The excess aggregate ensures a complete, dense covering.

  4. Curing: The polymer resin is allowed to cure and harden, securely locking the aggregate into the road surface. Curing time is dependent on the binder type and ambient temperature, but is often fast, allowing the road to be reopened in a matter of hours.
  5. Excess Aggregate Removal: Once cured, the loose, excess aggregate that did not bond to the resin is swept up and removed. This material can often be collected and reused.

✨ Benefits of HFST

HFST is a highly cost-effective safety countermeasure with significant benefits:

  • Crash Reduction: HFST has proven highly effective, with studies showing a significant reduction (often 50% or more) in wet-weather and roadway-departure crashes at treated locations.

  • Increased Skid Resistance: It dramatically increases the coefficient of friction, providing motorists with better control for braking, steering, and acceleration, especially in curves and wet conditions.

  • Speed of Installation: The treatment can be applied quickly, often requiring only short, temporary lane closures (e.g., 8-hour windows), minimizing disruption to traffic.

  • Durability and Service Life: The high-quality materials are extremely durable, with an expected service life of 5 to 10 years, even under heavy traffic and severe weather, including snowplowing.

  • Cost-Benefit Ratio: Compared to the cost of major geometric roadway realignments, HFST is a low-cost alternative that delivers a very high benefit-cost ratio due to the prevention of severe crashes.
