High-friction surface treatment binder
Time: 2025-12-04

High-friction surface treatment (HFST) primarily uses calcined bauxite aggregate with a durable polymer resin binder to increase skid resistance on various surfaces.

Materials Overview

An HFST system consists of an aggregate for texture and a binder to secure it.

Component DescriptionKey Properties
AggregateCalcined bauxite, heated for increased hardness and abrasion resistance, is the standard material.Hard, polish-resistant, and angular for tire grip.
BinderA multi-component polymer resin system that hardens when mixed. Epoxy, polyurethane, and polyester are common.Strong adhesion, resistance to environmental factors, and durability.
Where It's Used

HFST is applied in specific "spot" locations requiring higher friction. Examples include horizontal curves, intersections, bridge decks, steep grades, and pedestrian crossings.

Key Benefits

Improved Safety: Significantly reduces wet-weather crashes.

Durability: Can last 5 to 10 years.

Quick Installation: Minimizes traffic disruption.
